Press Release | 49 Walsh Street, South Yarra by NEOMETRO and MORQ
Neometro x MORQ - an unprecedented journey into architecture.
Born out of the subtle consolidation of natural light, geometry and materiality, Neometro’s 49 Walsh Street development is emblematic of an enduring quiet luxury that is both singular and effortless.
49 Walsh Street is pre-eminent developer Neometro’s most significant project to date. The culmination of 35 years of experience realising design-led residential developments that draw upon the legacy of their inner-Melbourne locales, the project has been shaped by an ethos defined over decades to be perfectly honed at Walsh Street. Meticulously crafted in collaboration with award-winning Italian architecture firm MORQ, the development reflects a distinctly European perspective applied to a modern Australian context. The qualities of its surroundings have been considered to create a design response that intertwines mood, form and touch, a trilogy identified as fundamental to imparting an engaging sense of discovery.
Neometro Director Lochlan Sinclair has acknowledged the privilege of being in the position to collaborate with a practice such as MORQ.
“There is building, and then there is architecture,” he says, “MORQ designs environments that embody an architectural purity that prioritises the qualitative over preconceived ideas as to what a Melbourne apartment should be. The studio brings an entirely new bandwidth to high-quality built craftsmanship unseen in Melbourne multi-residential projects.”
Situated in the leafy interior of Melbourne’s sought-after Domain Precinct, adjacent to the ornate facades of historic mansions and stately Victorian terraces, the development leverages architecture’s prevailing relationship with nature to guide an eminent level of craftsmanship. The articulation of its facade finds a way of teasing the space beyond; the dance of shadows upon the composition of its volumes is suggestive of something further within. This mature play reflects an intrinsic aspect of Rome’s urban structure, which has become a fundamental quality of 49 Walsh Street and a vital marker of the peerless collaboration between Neometro and MORQ.
“MORQ’s approach to every project is one of first principles,” explains Lochlan. “At Walsh Street, that has manifested as a direct response to the environment and those instinctive qualities of space: light, outlooks, context, craft, etc.”
A constrained approach to form leavens the visual poetry of Walsh Street’s design. A symmetrical precision defines a clean built composition that holds within it rational and resolved programming. Spaces are functionally agile and universal by virtue of their simplicity while retaining richness through the interplay of light upon travertine, oak, and hand-troweled render and the thoughtful framing of vegetative views. A fine blushed palette continues throughout, effecting a sense of cohesion and warmth that extends across thresholds to borrow outdoor space from expansive garden terraces. Meticulously crafted joinery and intuitive spatial planning address discerning living patterns to bind aesthetics, atmosphere and function.
“There is a harmonious tension within the design language,” says Lochlan, “a balance between how the apartments look and how they feel.”
49 Walsh Street, South Yarra, presents a unique opportunity to live in apartments of unparalleled quality, reflecting a standard of craftsmanship unequalled in Melbourne. Comprising ten contemporary homes enveloped by generous vegetation, the building will be a timeless addition to its streetscape defined by its enduring materiality and uncompromising form.
Apartments are Now Selling, with pricing ranging between $3.975M to $21M.
